About

What are some of the words that describe what we wish for our children? Happiness? Health? Success? What if we could help our children live these values with something as simple, fun, and accessible as an afterschool program?

Certainly, we all remember the experience of growing up differently. For some, getting older was fun and exciting. For others, it was a time of bullying and peer pressure. However, no matter our own memories, we all had at least one time where we struggled to prepare for an exam, feel confident about ourselves, or release emotions of anger and fear. The difference between our middle school experiences and our children’s, though, is simple: our children have the opportunity to craft themselves in ways we rarely did.

After school one day each week from January 31 to May 2, school will transform into a creative, energetic realm of discovery called Crafting Yourself as we journey to fill our treasure boxes with the buried treasures we always had but maybe never even thought about. Crafting Yourself is a fun and interactive program where middle school students can explore what makes each of us unique and discover strengths within each student. In creative, musical, conversational, active, and even edible activities guided by student interests, the Crafting Yourself explorers will build their own treasures to remember what makes each of them unique, how they can use their strengths in difficult situations, how they can positively interact with classmates, and how they can apply their strengths to both school and community involvement. And, who knows? We may just find an unexpected treasure at the end of this journey!

A typical Crafting Yourself day will begin immediately after school with the following routine (based on a sample 3 p.m. to 4:05 p.m. program time frame):

3:00 – 3:10 p.m. Check-in with staff; snack available
3:10 – 3:25 p.m. Energetic transition (i.e. a positivity ballgame)
3:25 – 3:40 p.m. Primary activity
3:40 – 3:45 p.m. Clean up
3:45 – 4:00 p.m. Reflection questions in a circle
4:00 – 4:05 p.m. Check-out with staff

We will begin this three month journey by crafting our own treasure boxes to fill with a soundtrack of who we are, a journal for self-expression, and crafted games to remember to stop and enjoy the moment. We will explore teamwork in fun photography and improvisational activities, and we will explore balance and positivity in the school with cookie and poster projects. By the end of the program, the Crafting Yourself students will have spent time with friends exploring, understanding, creating, and applying the strengths we each have!
